Dave Downey is a 1985 graduate of Regis High School, where he shined in athletics during his time as a Royal. Dave played football, basketball and baseball for Regis from 1981-1985. He was named All State in each sport and Male Athlete of the Year at Regis in 1985. He tied for 4th place as the Gazette Eastern Iowa Prep of the Year. Dave was blessed with the opportunity to play for hall of fame coaches, Tom Good and Dick Breitbach. Dave credits these two coaches for putting him in a position to succeed not only in athletics, but in life, by reinforcing the virtues of hard work, competition, and resiliency.In football, Dave was named 1st Team All-State in Class 3A by the Des Moines Register in 1984 and 2nd Team All-State in all classes by the Iowa Newspaper Association as an offensive end. Dave was an unanimous 1st Team All-Metro selection as an offensive end and 2nd Team All-Metro on defense as a safety. Dave set the Regis High School reception record with 45 catches for 611 yards and four touchdowns in eight games. He was selected to play in the 1985 All-Iowa Shrine Bowl as a starting offensive end. Head coach, Tom Good, then in his 25th year of coaching, praised Dave as the “most outstanding wide receiver” to date that Regis had seen.In basketball, Dave led the Royals in scoring and rebounding in the 1984 state tournament, when he was selected to the All-Tournament Team that year. 1984 marked the third year in a row that Regis would win the state championship in basketball. The 1982, 1983 and 1984 Regis boys’ basketball “threepeat” teams were named among the Top 10 teams in the one hundred plus year history of the state basketball tournament by the Des Moines Register. Additionally, he was a two-time All-Metro selection; two-time honorable mention selection by the Iowa Newspaper Association; and special mention by the Des Moines Register. Dave was the captain as well as the leading scorer and rebounder on the 1985 Regis team, which amassed a 16-3 record and a #2 ranking in the state. Dave’s season unfortunately ended with an injury in the first round of the 1985 state tournament as the Royals fell short of a “fourpeat.”In baseball, Dave was named 3rd Team All-State in all classes as a center fielder by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association, leading the team in home runs and at-bats.After high school, he played baseball for Muscatine Community College for 1 year, before getting drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He transferred to the University of Iowa to concentrate on his education, earned his bachelors degree, and later earned a Master’s in Business Administration from St. Ambrose University. He then moved on to become a licensed Investment Advisor Representative and owns Downey Financial Services under the Berthel Fisher umbrella, and is also an adjunct business professor at Kirkwood Community College.He and his wife Wendy have a son, Jack. Dave has given back to the community through the years by coaching many teams, inclduing football, basketball, and baseball, through YMCA, Marion Recreational leagues, Upward Bound, Saints Baseball and Saints Xpress Basketball. Dave was also on the Board of Xpress Basketball and served as coaching coordinator. He has worked to help establish a system for Xpress Basketball to give consistency and technical expertise to their players, with the help of the Xavier varsity basketball staff, so that they may learn and enjoy the game in a structured and positive environment.
