Tom Keating is a longtime Xavier community supporter; serving as the Principal of Xavier High School from 2004-2018 and as the first President of Xavier High School in 2018. During his time at Xavier, Keating was instrumental in the development of many faith, academic, and program initiatives; many that remain in place today.Some of Mr. Keating’s accomplishments at Xavier in the area of faith include the start of the Kairos Retreat, Grandparents Mass, and the Memorial Mass.In the arena of planning and programming, Mr. Keating completed the comprehensive Visioning Plan in 2008, Traction 2017, the creation of Xavier Parents for Xcellence (XPX), Discover Xavier Night, the President/Principal Model 2018, and the President’s Council of Regents 2019.Academically, Mr. Keating created the Saint Louis University Dual Credit Partnership, expanded A.P. offerings from 6 classes to 12, Kirkwood Academies and Dual Credit Partnership, the iPad 1:1 Initiative, created the College/Career Coordinator position, and the Learning Coach position to assist IEP/504 students.Xavier facilities have seen many upgrades over the years under the direction of Mr. Keating including the construction of HECO Soccer Field, construction of Turf Stadium Field, renovation of the Learning Media Center (Library), the creation of the Fine Arts trophy display, storage facility, and track and tennis court resurfacing projects.He also was instrumental in the creation of Xavier’s fundraiser of Dancing with the Saints in 2016. Perhaps most notable was his participation in Dancing with the Saints Season 5 where he participated as a dancer and charmed us as Freddie Mercury -- later winning the People’s Choice mirrorball trophy.A native of Philadelphia, Tom earned his B.A. in psychology at Simpson College and holds a Master’s in Education Administration from Loras College. Prior to his work at Xavier, he taught, coached, and served as activities director at Wahlert Catholic High School in Dubuque. Tom’s volleyball teams at Wahlert Catholic High School won 11 state championships. He was named National Volleyball Coach of the Year twice – in 2004 and 2005. Tom was inducted into the Iowa Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame and the National Association of Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame. In 2010, Tom was named the National Catholic Education Association’s “National Educator of the Year.” Tom has written and taught graduate courses for Drake University on teaching and coaching. Tom currently serves as the Executive Director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association. He also serves on the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control. Tom and his wife, Jodi, have three adult sons that all graduated from Xavier.BIOGRAPHY UPDATED: JANUARY 2021
